Iran, South Africa sign cooperation document

Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and his South African counterpart Naledi Pandor have signed a document on the Joint Commission of Cooperation between the two countries.

The top Iranian diplomat is currently on an official visit to South Africa where he arrived earlier on Thursday.

Amirabdollahian and Ms. Pandor signed the document during the first session of the South Africa-Iran Joint Commission of Cooperation held in Pretoria on Thursday.

Heads of the Commission were in attendance as well.

Before departing for South Africa, the Iranian foreign minister said that his trip is aimed at discussing bilateral issues as well as holding the Joint Commission of Cooperation meeting after a three-year hiatus caused by the Covid pandemic.

He also said, during his trip, arrangements would be made for an upcoming visit of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to South Africa where he would attend the Friends of BRICS summit.

The summit, slated for August 24, would bring together heads of state from BRICS member countries namely Russia, China, India, South Africa, and Brazil as well as a number of countries, such as Iran and Saudi Arabia, wishing to join the bloc.
